There is certainly no shortage of weight loss pills, drinks, and supplements that make claims the product will help an individual lose weight. The question is whether these claims are valid and safe. The best weight loss supplements may contain at least one active ingredient whose purpose is to increase the fat burning process, appetite suppression, or reduce the rate at which the body absorbs fat. We will review five of these products including Lipozene.
- Alli (Orlistat)
One of the most popular weight loss supplements is Alli, the brand name for Orlistat. It works by breaking down a portion of the fat people eat which allows the intestines to absorb fewer grams of fat. This ultimately may allow the consumer to lose weight.
A review was conducted based on 11 studies. Those studies showed Orlistat may increase weight loss by approximately 2.9 percent compared to those who did not use the drug. However, it could cause side effects such as diarrhea, difficulty controlling the bowels, and abdominal pain.
Caffeine is a stimulant commonly found in coffee, chocolate, soft drinks, and tea. You will frequently find it as an additive in diet pills and supplements. A study was conducted on 76 adults classified as obese, and those who consumed high amounts of caffeine experienced a greater reduction in weight circumference, fat mass, and overall loss of weight compared to those who consumed lower amounts of caffeine. However, caffeine may cause increased heart rate, insomnia, and jitters.
Glucomannan is the active ingredient in Lipozene. It is a dietary fiber that works by absorbing the water in the gut which causes an individual to experience a feeling of fullness. This may result in the consumption of fewer calories, but there are conflicting study results regarding the success of Glucomannan in the weight loss process.
A study was conducted in 2005 with 176 overweight people that indicated Glucomannan contributed to weight loss in those people. On the other hand, a more recent review using random control trials failed to produce the same results but rather showed no indications the component helped with any significant weight loss. Some side effects may include abdominal pain, gas, and diarrhea.
- Garcinia Cambogia Extract
Garcinia Cambogia Extract is a popular weight loss aid. It is a fruit that contains hydroxycitric acid, a natural product that is believed to help with the weight loss process. The extract is produced from the juices of the fruit and is available in pill form. There is very little scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of the extract for weight loss. While it may not help with weight loss, it does not appear to have any side effects when taken as directed.
Hydroxycut is a popular dietary supplement that comes in several forms. The products usually contain various extracts and caffeine although caffeine-free versions are available. There have been no studies on Hydroxycut specifically. It is also difficult to provide information on the side effects since the ingredients vary. However, the versions containing caffeine may cause an increase in heart rate and nervousness.
